چکیده

The recovery of a filtrable virus from children with influenza has been described in other papers" T,the virus was isolated by means of the intranasal inoculation of ferrets with nasopharyngeal washings. The ferrets reacted to the washings with an acute respiratory infection, followed by recovery. After the virus had been transmitted in series through ferrets for' several generations, the reactions exhibited by many of the animals appeared to be unusually severe, and cultures of the lungs and of the heart blood revealed an invasion with a hemolytic streptococcus. The studies described below are limited in extent, but seem worth reporting for they throw some light on the source of the complicating organism and its role in the experimental virus disease so produced in ferrets.

Efficacy of oseltamivir therapy in ferrets inoculated with different clades of H5N1 influenza virus.

Highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza viruses have infected an increasing number of humans in Asia, with high mortality rates and the emergence of multiple distinguishable clades. It is not known whether antiviral drugs that are effective against contemporary human influenza viruses will be effective against systemically replicating viruses, such as these pathogens. Therefore, we evaluated the use o...

Influenza A (H10N7) Virus Causes Respiratory Tract Disease in Harbor Seals and Ferrets

Avian influenza viruses sporadically cross the species barrier to mammals, including humans, in which they may cause epidemic disease. Recently such an epidemic occurred due to the emergence of avian influenza virus of the subtype H10N7 (Seal/H10N7) in harbor seals (Phoca vitulina). This epidemic caused high mortality in seals along the north-west coast of Europe and represented a potential ris...

Seasonal Outbreak of Influenza A virus Infection in Pediatric Age Groups During 2004-2005 in South of Iran

Background: The pandemic and regional influenza outbreaks resulting from antigenic variation of influenza viruses have been the subject of numerous studies which are crucial to the preparation of the vaccine. Frequent global winter outbreaks of influenza viruses require a constant surveillance of emerging influenza variants in order to develop efficient influenza vaccine. Methods: This study wa...

Experimental Study on the Pathogenicity of Avian Influenza A/Ch/It/5093/99(H7N1) Virus in Chicken

In this study, the pathogenicity of A/Ch/It/5093/1999 H7N1 which had been isolated from chicken during the outbreak in Italy was assessed in chicken by experimental infection virus. Ten SPF chickens of four week-old were inoculated with this virus, and five chickens were inoculated with uninfected allantoic fluid. For determination of virus shedding, oropharyngeal and cloacal swabs were taken f...

The R292K mutation that confers resistance to neuraminidase inhibitors leads to competitive fitness loss of A/Shanghai/1/2013 (H7N9) influenza virus in ferrets.

BACKGROUND Neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors are the only licensed therapeutic option for human zoonotic H7N9 infections. An NA-R292K mutation that confers broad-spectrum resistance to NA inhibitors has been documented in H7N9 patients after treatment. METHODS We evaluated the transmission potential of a human influenza A H7N9 isolate with a NA-R292K mutation in the ferret model followed by genot...
